Friday June 6th
The Torrey Pines Gulls, and our new co-hosts Horizon
Hobby and JR Radios, invite you to participate in the
15th annual International Hand Launch Glider Festival (IHLGF)
on June 7-8, at the TPG Poway Flight Center, located in
Poway (San Diego), California.
The international reputation that the IHLGF has
developed over the years is due in great part to a
combination of the competition format that the IHLGF has
created and the wealth of championship caliber pilots
from all over the world that gather each year in Poway
to battle for the coveted IHLGF Championship of HLG.
You don't have to be a world caliber pilot to have a
great time at the IHLGF. The sheer joy of two days
(actually three or four for most pilots) of flying HLG's
with a great group of pilots, combined with the "social"
aspect of the IHLGF is what makes this "event" so
popular.
The IHLGF will feature FAI F3K tasks for 2008. There
will be limited modifications to the F3K Rules, which
will accommodate some of the unique characteristics of
our field and contest format.
Many of you old timers, who have participated in
previous IHLGF events, will find a number of events to
be the same as we have been flying for years. This is
not a coincidence as the IHLGF has had a definite
influence on many of the F3K Tasks and Rules. With F3K
being an official event under the auspices of the FAI,
an F3K World Championship will not be far behind; many
expect that to be as early as 2009. The IHLGF is being
considered as one of the qualifier contests to determine
the first USA F3K Championship team. We are honored at
this prospect and are working hard to put together as
competitive event as possible. We sincerely hope that
this adoption of the internationally accepted F3K Rules
will further enhance our reputation as one of the must
attend HLG contests in the world. We have always been
blessed with an array of international pilots from all
parts of the globe and we look forward to even more
international pilots attending the IHLGF this year and
in the future. We love our international pilots! Not
only are they great pilots but they are always great
ambassadors for their countries.
The continuing goal of the IHLGF Committee is to further
enhance the world-class reputation of the IHLGF. We
believe that we have come up with a set of F3K tasks and
rules that will make the IHLGF 2008 a fun and
challenging event. The IHLGF 2008
tasks and
rules may be
found on our website. Please
review them, practice them and feel free to use them in
contests you may be sponsoring.
There will be four classes of pilots this year: Open,
Junior (15 and under), Senior (16-19) and Eagle (55 and
better). Each class will have their own set of awards.
Open class will have awards through 10th place and the
Junior, Senior and Eagle classes will have plaques
through 3rd place. Only Open Class
pilots will be eligible for the Championship Fly-Off.
All pilots will have the opportunity to compete against
each other during the ten rounds of open competition. As
such, each pilot must launch his/her own plane. If you
qualify (age) and wish to fly in a class other than
Open, you must register as such on the entry form.
Once again we will have ONE "throw-out" round. Your best
nine out of ten rounds will be used to calculate your
score. The top ten Open Class pilots will be in the
Championship Fly-Off and will carry their adjusted
scores into the Fly-Off. Scores do not reset at the
beginning of the Fly-Off.
One of the things that make the IHLGF so special is the
social aspect. We begin Friday evening with a "Post
Practice Social" which will be held at the Hamburger
Factory. Saturday evening we have an old fashioned "all
you can eat" Pizza Party planned at Round Table Pizza in
Poway.
The field will be available beginning Thursday, June
5th, for practice. Toilet facilities will be available
beginning Thursday. RV parking is allowed at field;
however, there are no hook ups.
We look forward to you joining us for another great
weekend of IHLGF competition and camaraderie. If you
