April 8 Club Meeting
Mike Lee will be our guest speaker for
April of 2008. He is currently the 2008 F3J Team USA juniors
team manager. He recently authored a 4 part article in an RC
magazine about F3J covering all aspects of flight, finishing
with coverage of the 2007 US F3J team selections. We are
very lucky to have him come educate us on this exciting part
of the sport.
2008 Torrey Pines Gulls Thermal
Competition Rules
Competition Classes
The 2008 competition season shall have two competition
classes, flown at the same contest: Unlimited and RES
Unlimited may be flown by any sailplane without a motor.
RES may be flown by any sailplane that is controlled by
Rudder, Elevator and spoiler.
No movable trailing edge may be used on the primary wing.
Competitor Classes
There shall be four competitor classes flown in unlimited:
Master, Expert, Sportsman and Novice. All classes will be
determined by pilots’ choice. There will be no standard for
promotion. A competitor may advance to a higher class, but
may not demote themselves.
There shall be one competitor class flown in RES pilots will
fly against each other.
Tasks
All contents shall have at least 4 rounds, subject to
weather or other conditions. Contest Directors will
coordinate tasks with the Thermal Coordinator, and provide
contest announcement in the club newsletter. Announcement
shall be submitted no later than the 15th of each month.
Timing
All timing shall be consistent with the “rounding” method.
Times which show X:XX.50 shall round up to the next second.
Times which show X:XX.49 shall use the seconds shown on the
watch.
Scoring
All competition classes and competitor classes shall be
scored together at each contest. All scores shall be
maintained to two decimal places.
Cumulative Scoring
All Unlimited and RES pilot classes shall be scored together
and normalized to 1000 points. The season championship shall
be determined by the best 9 scores.
Year-end awards shall be given for Sportsman, Expert, Master
and RES. Season “High Points” award shall be given to the
competitors that accumulate the most points in Unlimited and
RES.
February 12 Club meeting:
Tuesday February 12 is the Torrey Pines
Gulls general meeting. The meeting will be at its usual
location of the Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park and will
start at 7:00 pm. Sean Porter will talk to us about his
molding techniques, ins and outs. We'll be out of there by
9:00. Don't forget that the next month on March 11 we'll
have a swap meet instead of the general meeting. For that
meeting we'll not have a raffle, either.
Cliff Hunter, out going President
To all club members, this is my last month as president of
TPG. Below is a summary of your officer’s duties during
2007, Doug Rubin Vice-President in charge of programs each
month, Adam Smith as secretary and keeping the records,
Keith Finkenbiner Treasurer for keeping great financial
records and responding quickly for member reimbursement,
Parviz Kamiab, for Membership and thermal Coordinator
keeping the thermal coordination scores and setting up the
contest dates and the post cards for club meeting, Thank you
Mike Lance for your strong support as the slope coordinator
and representing the Torrey Pine Gulls at TP Soaring
Council, Wench master Eric Hoffman for the hard work
repairing and, maintaining all club and thermal equipment.
Most important making sure the equipment would arrived when
he could not make the contest because of work commitments,
Bill Eckles Newsletter Editor for stepping up an learning
new software programs and putting out the club newsletter
monthly which is no small task, John Bruner and Alan “Moose”
Butler for the monthly raffle and great raffle prizes, Ron
Scharck for continuing the IHLGF and everyone who helped
make the IHLGF a great success, Historian Gary Fogel for
keeping great records of Torrey Pines Gulls history and
providing any and all information when requested. I would
like to thank all of the club officers and Club members for
their support and encouragement for the last 2 years. With
that said here are the December 2007 activities:
The Christmas Party is almost here. It is on Tuesday,
December 11, 2007 at the Aerospace Museum. It will start at
6:30 pm and go till 9:00 pm. The program will be year-end
awards and Modeler of the year. Also the Museum will be open
to members and family to tour. Dinner will be catered at a
cost of $1.00 per person. Please RSVP ASAP so we can get a
head count to Steve Hurd the Web master at steve@torreypinesgulls.org.
Remember family and friends are welcome to come to this
event.
