Flying Poway |
Welcome to Flying at Poway Field -
Flying at Poway Field is fun and exciting. Poway field
offers a unique thrill and pleasure. If you enjoy the
excitement of catching that small low thermal, and feel you
are up for this challenge, join in on the fun.

TPG at Poway field always welcomes new or visiting pilots to
come and try the task of extending their flights by looking
for thermals. Visiting pilots should be accompany by a TPG
member when practical and should not be left alone at the
field.
What do you need?
For residents of Southern California who are non-beginners,
there are 4 requirements, 1) AMA membership, 2) Membership
of the Torrey Pines Gulls or Torrey Pines Scale soaring, 3)
Everyone must obey the flight regulations, and 4) Pilot
introduction. The first 3 are given, but you may need
further familiarity with the fourth, which will be
addressed.
What do you need to know?
Rules to fly at Poway field are self-explanatory. The first
requirement is the safety of the pilot(s), in spectators and
the neighbors.
The most important rule at Poway is the familiarity with the
“NO FLY ZONE AIRSPACE”. There is a map of the NO FLY ZONE
posted on the WEB SITE. To find this airspace, draw a line
from the winch line toward the East to the edge of furthest
left tree facing you. The other boundary line is another
line from the winch line to the top of the hill on the right
side of the property in front of you. As long as you stay
out of that airspace, you have met this requirement. This
requirement was created by the property owner and the TPG
members to reflect a “Good Neighbor Policy” See the attach
map.
Note: While winches are in use, no standing and flying
between the winches and the retrievers are allowed.
Use of frequency board –
Use of Frequency board at Poway field is a must. Please make
sure you have a pin on the board for the frequency that you
will be using.
What do you need to fly?
You need to have your personal Hi start or winch. The
winches are set up on the left side of the road to the north
and the Hi starts are set up on the right side of the road.
Stay away from the planted areas. We as users of the field
have been asked not to damage or destroy the crop.
How long does it take to get pilot Rating?
TPG does not have a pilot rating program set up for Poway
field but it is required for all new pilots to meet with one
of the veteran TPG pilots before flying at this field.
Flying at Poway can be challenging too -
Flying at Poway is very challenging but
rewarding.
TPG has pre-scheduled monthly contests that are very
exciting social events. We welcome all new pilots and guests
from out of town. Although membership of TPG is not
required, membership of AMA is, to participate in the
contests. Along with AMA membership comes Liability
Insurance.
Think Safety -
We cannot emphasize enough about the safety. We pride
ourselves in having hardly any incidents in Poway field.
This is due to our members following the rules and
respecting the other fellow pilots and the neighbors.
It’s pretty simple -
Join TPG on line, or print the membership form and mail it
in. Remember that first requirement for membership and being
able to fly at any of TPG sights is AMA membership.
Horses and pedestrian -
Since this field is not completely enclosed, we have a lot
of visitors that walk, jog, or ride bicycles. We also have
many individuals
that ride
their horses. We ask all the pilots to respect others,
especially the horses. Horses have a habit of getting
spooked by noise or large flying (3 meter planes) objects.
