F3K / Discus Launch Glider (DLG)

Our goal is to provide a monthly event that is both fun for Sportsman pilots and challenging for Open pilots. Please join us or just come on by to watch and maybe even time.

Contest Format

Traditional F3K and eF3K/F5K planes are welcome. Motor planes will fly together with hand-launch planes but be scored separately.

Classes: Open, Sportsman & Motor. Sportsman being the class designated for hand launch pilots new to DLG or new to DLG contests. Electric-launch pilots should register with the "Motorized class".

Landing out of bounds, launching outside of the flying window, shedding parts or landing with the nose buried will score a zero for that flight.

We usually fly 6 rounds with a different task for each round. The tasks are selected by the Contest Director and will be announced at the pilot’s meeting. For a list of the possible tasks, and for detailed contest rules please see section 5.7 of the official FAI rulebook. Any changes to the format, either due to weather or other reasons, will be declared by the Contest Director at the pilot's meeting immediately prior to the contest.

eDLG guidelines:

  • 2s batteries
  • Altitude-limiting device (such as an Altis) set to 50 meter launch height target, 7 seconds motor run w/anti-zoom enabled
  • Launch should mimic f3k-style launch with ~70 degree climb
  • Motor restart (outside of a launch) results in a 0 for the entire round (ex: after getting your 3 and 4 minute flights during 1,2,3,4 you are about to land way out for your 2 minute flight. If you motor back you will negate your accumulated flight time and get a zero for the entire round but at least you wont have to go hunting for your plane)

How to Participate

Everyone is welcome to come watch. You will need a current AMA membership to participate. A TPG membership gets you a discount on the entry fee. Don’t be discouraged if you are not flying the latest design. As long as it is safe to fly, come out and have fun!

Entry is $5 for TPG members and $10 for non-members.

Event registration and payment will be through F3X Vault, with pilots self-entering scores on their phones. Entry will generally close one day before the contest. Registration details for each event will be provided in advance on our Discord server and Google Group.

Contest Location

Contests will be held at the Poway Flight Center unless otherwise communicated. Our ongoing use of these properties is totally dependent on being good guests. Please respect the rules and make safe flying your number one priority.

Pilots meetings generally start at 8:45am, and the contest starts at 9:00 and ends around 1pm.
